According to the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Perspectives Study by Microsoft, 57% of male college students and 68% of female college who chose a STEM major say they were inspired by one person, one event, or one class during middle or high school. A majority of middle and high school students do not have an opportunity to be inspired by role models, however, and 80% of students don’t take any STEM-related courses in school. With at least 70% of jobs expected to be STEM-related by 2020, it’s important that we all get together and start pulling in the same direction. Don’t forget that “A” in “STEAM” (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) either, because even careers in the arts, like journalism, will require STEM education and background in order to understand and convey (in a knowledgeable way) what STEM has done and will do in the future.”…Read full article here.
