Since the birth of computing, electronics and telecommunications, a four-year college degree has been a standard requirement even for entry-level career jobs in the technology field. In 2016, with job skill requirements shifting rapidly and the tech industry adding more jobs than could be filled, innovative employers like IBM and Accenture began pushing beyond the norms to expand their tech hiring pool: dropping degree requirements, building online training programs for entry-level career starters and creating apprenticeships.

What was once unconventional, however, is now gaining momentum.
